The Making of Mussar
Timeless Craftsmanship. Cultural Pride.
The Mussar is far more than just a piece of clothing, it is a proud emblem of Omani identity. Wrapped carefully on the head, it completes the traditional attire of Omani men during formal gatherings, weddings, and religious celebrations like Eid.
For generations, the Mussar has symbolized dignity, tradition, and a sense of belonging. Wearing one is a personal expression of pride and cultural reverence, passed from father to son, mentor to youth.
Mussar Style Reflect Cultural Landscape of Oman
The journey of a Mussar begins in the Himalayan mountains, where soft wool is collected from the underbelly of mountain goats in the Indian regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
This wool – primarily Pashmina and sometimes the rarer Shahtoosh – is prized for its exceptional softness and warmth.
Once the wool is harvested, it is spun into fine threads and prepared for the weaving process, marking the beginning of a craft that marries tradition with artistry.
Creating a Mussar involves a sequence of skilled steps that reflect centuries of heritage. The design is first imprinted onto the fabric using traditional wooden stamps carved with intricate patterns.
This print serves as the guide for embroidery, which may be done by hand or machine. Hand embroidery, although more time-consuming, results in one-of-a-kind pieces that are highly valued for their uniqueness and craftsmanship.
After embroidery, the fabric is washed to remove any residues and carefully dried and pressed before it is folded, packed, and shipped to Oman. Each Mussar carries the essence of this detailed process – a tangible story woven into every thread.
Mussar Style Reflect Cultural Landscape of Oman
Mussar styles vary across Oman and often reflect regional identities and personal taste. The Termah Mussar, perhaps the most popular, is known for its colourful and elaborate patterns and is worn widely across the Sultanate. In contrast, the Al Subaaia style, preferred in Sur and Dhofar, features bright colours without intricate patterns, offering a simpler, bolder statement.
The Al Saidi Mussar exists in two forms: a royal blue version worn exclusively by members of the Royal Family, and a more accessible variation with a single-pattern design. How a Mussar is worn – with or without a kummah underneath – adds yet another layer of individuality and elegance to the attire.
Quality That Lasts
The value of a Mussar lies in its material, craftsmanship, and origin. A good quality Pashmina Mussar can start around OMR 50 and range upwards to OMR 400 or more, depending on the softness of the wool and the complexity of the embroidery.
All AlRaqi Mussars are handcrafted, with the best of threads, with each stitch reflecting attention to detail that machine-made versions often lack. While mass-produced Mussars from China may be available at lower prices - sometimes as little as OMR 15 - they are generally not preferred by Omani nationals who recognize the superior quality and cultural significance of original handmade pieces.
Authentic Mussars are soft to the touch, finely detailed, and built to last - provided they are cared for properly. The best Mussars are a combination of tradition, luxury, and functionality, designed not just for one occasion but for a lifetime of use.
